If you are here, then you have finally found your love for yoga and you can't decide what to wear for yoga or you must be questioning yourself why I can't do yoga effectively? Then there is something u must need to know that having/wearing proper and suitable clothes for yoga can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of yoga. As we all know that yoga is all about relaxation, meditation and Concentration. And wearing anything non stretchy or loose will cause distraction and make you uncomfortable. So in simple words you just need something that will stretch easily without causing any strain and something that won't be loose enough or slip easily as that will make you uncomfortable. And also it needs to be breathable.
Types of Yoga.
Before we dive deeper into the types of clothing you need for Yoga You need To Know the different types of yoga as clothes also depend on what type of yoga you are practicing. As for beginners you must be practicing Hatha or Vinyasa. Hatha yoga is based on coordinating movement with breathing and Vinyasa being slightly higher paced compared to Hatha. But there are other types also like Bikram(hot yoga) which are taught in hot places, so you will sweat a lot. It helps in detoxifying your body. But keeping that aside which means u need something that could absorb excess sweat and retain that easily. There are also types like Iyengar yoga, power and ashtanga yoga which involves frequent change in poses for which u will be needing stretchy and fitting clothes.
So, starting from top to bottom..
Bra
It is one of the most important parts of clothing to decide first if you are going with them alone. As u need to find something that holds it firmly enough that it won't slip easily in the middle of any pose and also gives a proper coverage area as it may also bother others and make them uncomfortable. It doesn't need to be as supportive as running bra sufficiently supportive enough to hold them in place. It also needs to be comfortable as you don't get distracted while working out. Remember some key tips like always avoid bra with fastening at the back, that have v neck and light coloured. On my side of recommendation Running Girl bra are best from my perspective.
Singlets/Tanks
Singlets and tanks are very best as they provide unrestricted arm movement. But something to keep in mind that it cannot be loose as there are various upside down poses and angled poses which will make them come off and fall on ur face sometimes blocking your eyesight. And which even lead to injuries if you fall while standing upside down so selecting a proper tank is must. A style that is form-fitting without feeling tight or restricted is an excellent choice.
Long Sleeve Tops
If you want to go with full sleeve tops that too also is fine. Just if u want to use a loose top make sure to wear a tank or singlet inside. Which could be very helpful in maintaining the temperature of your body as you can take it off and workout in tanks whenever you feel hot. But then also from my opinion if you want to try long sleeve tops, try getting a body fitting top that is stretchable enough to not cause any restrictions whatsoever.
Shorts
Choosing a correct pair of shorts is way too crucial. As when you are practicing Bikram it needs to be very absorbent. And while doing power and ashtanga yoga it needs to be something that stays in place as it may crumble up. And most importantly it needs to be made up of soft material as any other could potentially scratch your inner thigh while twisting and which could be very irritating. If you are going with just shorts then make sure it has a good coverage area which will provide a nice and comfortable environment for you and others too. Sometimes it could be hard to decide what to pick for that I would recommend bicycle shorts.
Full Length Pants
For full length most of the people go with leggings but you could also use loose pants with bottom locking. As goes for leggings you need to keep a few things in mind that it should stay opaque and you can check that by just bending down and asking your friend if it's opaque enough. And then the other thing is to make sure that it doesn't slip down while you are upside down. It could be very irritating. All this is very important to keep in mind as it can disturb you and yoga requires concentration.
Gloves and Socks
Yoga is something that is usually done bare hand and feet. But if you have sweaty hands and legs then you could consider buying a pair of gloves for better grip. Just make sure it's a bit stretchable. It also goes the same for the socks too.
Shoes
In most cases u won't have to wear shoes as most of them restrict your ankle movement. But even so if you wanted to wear shoes while yoga. then you could pick something with ample space to move around your ankle. And also snug enough that it won't move on its own. Or you could also buy any that match with your yoga dress as you could just wear it while you are on your way to yoga or going back home after yoga.
Accessories
As for accessories u won't be needing anything except your yoga mat, a towel, and a water bottle to keep you hydrated sweat free. There are various types of mattress thick, thin, long, short, etc. You could choose any of them according to your comfort. But these things are must. So make sure to buy them as soon as possible.
