Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while enhancing flexibility and postural alignment. Pilates activities aim to hit the heart, while other parts of the body still work in the exercises. With or without tools, you can do Pilates (more on that below), but no matter what, expect the moves to require long, accurate motions and breath control. The core body, which is your base, is reinforced and balanced, so that you can walk effectively while strengthening your balance, stability, and agility. A standard Pilates exercise is 45 minutes to an hour long.
Pilates can be a type of exercise that is aerobic and non-aerobic. It takes attention and concentration, since you are shifting your body across specific ranges of motion. In a healthy way, Pilates lengthens and stretches all the different muscle groups in the body. In order to regulate the body by movement, it takes focus to reach a centre point. There is a specified positioning, pacing and breathing routine for each exercise.
You never work your body to fatigue in Pilates, because there is no sweating or straining, only deep concentration. The routine consists of a series of exercise sequences that are carried out over a session of limited repetitions, typically five to ten times. It uses mat work and advanced resistance devices.
