"Pranayama is control of Breath" In the body, "Prana" is breath or vital energy. The pranic energy responsible for life or life force is expressed at subtle levels by prana, and "ayama" means power. So "Control of Breath" is Pranayama.
The rhythms of pranic energies can be controlled with pranayama and a balanced body and mind can be attained. In his Yoga Sutras text, Patanjali referred to pranayama as a way of achieving higher states of consciousness, citing the holding of breath as an essential practice of attaining Samadhi. Hatha Yoga also speaks about 8 kinds of pranayama that can be safe for the body and mind.
Around the body, Prana creates an aura. It flows through thousands of channels of subtle energy called nadis and centers of energy called chakras. One's state of mind is determined by the amount and quality of prana and the way it flows through the nadis and chakras.
The mind remains calm, positive, and enthusiastic if the level of prana is high and its flow is continuous, smooth, and steady. In the nadis and chakras, however, the absence of knowledge and attention to one's breath could cause partial blockages. This leads, unfortunately, to a jerky and broken flow of prana. As a result, one experiences increased worries, fear, uncertainty, tensions, conflict and other negative qualities. As a result, worries, fear, uncertainty, tensions, conflict and other negative qualities increased in one experience. In the subtle and then surfaces on the physical level, every problem first arises. In your prana (pranic body), sickness appears long before you physically get sick.
